Wrong name on your flight ticket? How to fix it, and what it costs
Short answer: tell whoever issued the ticket today. On the day of issue a ticket can usually be voided and reissued with the right spelling at no penalty. After that day the airline's correction rules apply: a minor typo is often fixed free or for a small fee, a different person's name is not a correction and usually means a new ticket. The airline will send you back to the agent if an agent issued the ticket, so start there.
First, check what kind of mistake it is
- Typo in the same person's name (one or two letters wrong, names swapped, a missing middle name): a correction. Most airlines allow it.
- A different person: a name change. Most airlines do not allow it; the ticket is cancelled under its fare rules and a new one is bought.
- Title or middle name: usually no action needed. Check-in matches first name and surname to the passport.
Why the same day matters so much
Tickets issued by travel agents through the airline settlement system can be voided on the day they were issued: the sale is cancelled as if it never happened, the full amount comes back, and a new ticket is issued with the correct name. Some airlines extend a penalty-free cancellation to midnight of the next day for agency sales. From the day after, a correction becomes a reissue, which follows the airline's rules and may carry an airline fee plus the agent's fee.
So the single most useful habit is to read the confirmation e-mail the moment it arrives and compare every name with the passport.
What it costs
There is no single rule. Many airlines fix a minor spelling error free of charge, especially when told within a day. Others charge a fixed correction fee. Some low-cost carriers charge for any change at all. On top of the airline's charge, an agent may add a service fee. Ask for the two amounts separately and in writing before you agree.
At SkyKoda: every correction comes as a written quote showing the airline charge and our fee, and nothing changes on your ticket until you accept it. See our promises.
Steps to get it fixed
- Find who issued the ticket. The e-ticket says "issued by" or shows the agent's name. If it was an agent, contact the agent: the airline cannot void or reissue an agent's ticket.
- Write, don't just call. E-mail or a message gives the request a time stamp, which matters for the same-day rule.
- Send the passport page (or the ID you will fly with) so the correction is made exactly as printed.
- Ask for the quote in writing: airline charge, agent fee, and when the corrected ticket will arrive.
- Check the new e-ticket against the passport again, including the ticket number, before you file it away.
If you only notice at the airport
A one-letter typo is often waved through on a domestic flight, but it is the airline's call at the desk. For an international flight, the airline's check-in agent or the immigration officer at the other end can refuse a name that does not match the passport. Call the issuing agent from the airport: a correction can sometimes be done within minutes if the fare allows it.
How to avoid it next time
- Type names from the passport, not from memory, and in the passport's order: first name, then surname.
- Leave out titles (Mr, Mrs, Chief, Dr) unless the booking form asks for them in a separate box.
- Check the review page before paying: that is the last free moment to change anything. On SkyKoda the names you typed are shown on the review page and nobody retypes them.
Common questions
Can I fly if my name is misspelt on the ticket?
A small typo (one or two letters) often passes check-in, but it is the airline's decision at the desk and an immigration officer abroad can be stricter. Fix it before you travel rather than hope.
Is a name correction the same as a name change?
No. A correction fixes the spelling of the same person (ADEBAYO to ADEBAYO, OLU to OLUWASEUN). A name change gives the ticket to a different person, which most airlines do not allow at all: the ticket has to be cancelled and a new one bought.
Why does the same day matter?
A ticket issued by an agent can usually be voided on its day of issue, so a wrong name can be fixed by cancelling the sale and issuing the ticket again with no penalty. After that day a reissue follows the airline's correction rules and may carry a fee.
Who fixes it, the agent or the airline?
The one who issued the ticket. If you booked through an agent, the airline will send you back to the agent, because only the issuing agent can void or reissue that ticket.
What does a name correction cost?
It varies by airline: free for a minor typo on many carriers, a fixed fee on others, and on some low-cost carriers a charge for any change. The agent may add a service fee. Ask for the airline charge and the agent fee separately.
Do I need the name exactly as in my passport?
Yes for international flights: first name and surname as printed in the passport, in that order, no titles. Middle names are usually optional. For domestic flights the name must match the ID you show.
