Flight Ticket Refunds in Nigeria (2026): How Long They Really Take

Flight ticket refunds in Nigeria: how they work and how long they really take

By the SkyKoda travel desk · Updated 30 October 2026

Short answer: for a domestic flight in Nigeria the airline must refund you within 14 days (immediately if you paid cash). For an international ticket the airline's fare rules apply and the money usually takes 2 to 6 weeks to reach the agent, then a few days to reach you. The delays people complain about come from the hand-offs in between: nobody lodged the request, nobody chased the airline, or the agent sat on money the airline had already paid. The fix is dates: ask for the date it was sent to the airline and the date the airline paid.

The rule for domestic flights: 14 days

Part 19 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (the consumer protection part) sets the timeline for airlines flying inside Nigeria: a refund is paid immediately when the ticket was bought with cash, and within 14 days when it was paid by card, transfer, cheque or voucher. In October 2025 the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) rejected airlines' claims that refunds take four weeks and repeated that carriers cannot set their own timelines. It has sanctioned airlines for missing the deadline, including a case where a passenger waited 53 days.

If a domestic airline tells you "four to six weeks", quote the regulation and, if nothing moves, complain to the NCAA consumer protection directorate with your ticket number and the date you asked.

International tickets: the airline's rules, then the agent's speed

Foreign airlines are not bound by the 14-day rule. What applies is the fare rule printed with your ticket (refundable, refundable with a penalty, or non-refundable) and the airline's own processing time. Agency documents from airlines put the time for a refund submitted through the agency settlement system (BSP) at up to 21 days, longer in busy periods. Under IATA's resolutions an airline should refund the agent in the remittance cycle after the request. In practice, budget two to six weeks from the day the request reaches the airline.

Where the time really goes when you booked through an agent

A refund for a ticket sold by a travel agency has four steps, and each one can stall:

  1. You ask the agent. The agent checks the fare rules and tells you what comes back. This should take a day or two, not weeks.
  2. The agent lodges the refund with the airline. Through BSP, the consolidator, or the airline's agency desk. If this step is skipped, nothing else happens, however long you wait.
  3. The airline pays the agent. Two to six weeks for international airlines, 14 days for domestic ones.
  4. The agent pays you. This should be days, not weeks: the money is already there.

The two dates that tell you where your money is are the date of step 2 and the date of step 3. An agent who cannot give you either has not done the work. At SkyKoda every cancellation shows these dates on your Manage booking page and in the e-mails we send at each stage, and we send the refund to the airline within 2 working days of your go-ahead and pay you within 3 working days of the airline paying us. See our promises.

What is deducted, and why your refund is smaller than you paid

  • Airline cancellation penalty: fixed by the fare rules, from zero on a flexible fare to the whole base fare on a non-refundable one.
  • Non-refundable parts of the fare: on many fares the base fare is lost but the taxes and airport charges on an unflown ticket are refundable. Ask for them.
  • Agent service fee: a fixed amount or a percentage, which should be stated before you agree to the cancellation.
  • Payment fees: the card or gateway fee paid on the way in is usually not returned.

You are entitled to the breakdown in writing before you accept. A quote with one number and no explanation is a reason to ask again.

The one case that is nearly free: the same day

A ticket issued by an agent can usually be voided on its day of issue: the sale is cancelled as if it never happened and the full amount comes back without a penalty. Some airlines extend this to midnight the next day for agency sales. So if you need to cancel, or you spot a mistake, tell the agent the same day the ticket was issued.

When the airline cancels or moves the flight

If the airline cancels your flight, or changes it so it no longer works for you, the refund is not a cancellation by you: for Nigerian flights Part 19 gives you the choice of a full refund of the unused part or rebooking at the earliest opportunity or a later date, and no cancellation penalty should apply. Keep the airline's e-mail or message about the change: it is your evidence.

How to follow a refund without losing your mind

  1. Ask for the refund in writing (e-mail or the agent's manage-booking page) so the request has a date.
  2. Get the quote with the breakdown and the expected dates.
  3. Ask for the airline lodging date and reference once it is lodged.
  4. Count 14 days (domestic) or 2 to 6 weeks (international) from that date, then ask whether the airline has paid.
  5. Once the airline has paid the agent, the money should reach you within days. Ask for the payment reference.
  6. Domestic flight past 14 days with no refund: complain to the NCAA with your ticket number and your dates.

Common questions

How long does a flight refund take in Nigeria?

For a domestic flight the airline must refund within 14 days if you paid electronically, and immediately if you paid cash (NCAA regulations, Part 19). International airlines follow their own fare rules and typically take two to six weeks after the refund request reaches them.

Can an airline say refunds take four weeks?

Not for domestic flights. In October 2025 the NCAA said airlines cannot set their own refund timelines and that the 14-day rule under Part 19 of the 2023 regulations stands.

I booked through a travel agent. Who refunds me?

The agent requests the refund from the airline on your behalf, the airline pays the agent, and the agent pays you. Ask the agent for the date the request was lodged with the airline and the date the airline paid: without those two dates you cannot tell where the money is.

Why was my refund less than I paid?

A refund is the fare rules of your ticket applied: a cancellation penalty set by the airline, non-refundable parts of the fare, and any service fee of the agent. Taxes on an unused ticket are usually refundable even on a non-refundable fare. You are entitled to the breakdown in writing.

Does a refund go back to my card?

A card payment is usually refunded to the same card and can take a few working days to show after it is sent. Bank transfer payments are refunded to the account you name.

What if the airline cancelled the flight?

If the airline cancels, you can choose a full refund of the unused part of the ticket, or rebooking on the next available flight or a later date that suits you (NCAA Part 19 for Nigerian flights). A refund for an airline cancellation should not carry a cancellation penalty.
